Carnglen Credit Union Celebrates 50 Years with Biggest-Ever School Savings Scheme

Carnglen Credit Union is celebrating a very special milestone this year as it marks 50 years of serving the local community — and what better way to celebrate than by making this year’s School Savings Scheme the biggest and best yet!

The Carnglen Credit Union School Savings Scheme continues to encourage children to develop good saving habits from an early age, while learning the value of managing and looking after their money.

This year, five local schools are taking part in the scheme:

St Brigid’s Primary School, Mayogall

St Brigid’s Primary School / Bunscoil Naomh Bríd, Tirkane

St Mary’s Primary School, Glenview

St Patrick’s Primary School, Glen

St John’s Primary School, Swatragh

Every Tuesday, children bring their Junior Savings Book to school along with their savings. The money is collected through the school savings scheme, allowing pupils to save regularly in a fun, simple and convenient way.

New for 2026 – Children Can Post Their Own Savings!

To make this year’s scheme even more exciting, Carnglen Credit Union has introduced new school savings post boxes.

The colourful post boxes give children the opportunity to post their own savings into the box, ready for collection by Carnglen Credit Union. The initiative is designed to make saving even more engaging for children and gives them a greater sense of responsibility and ownership of their savings.

Carnglen Credit Union Manager Aisling Doherty said:

“We are absolutely delighted to be celebrating 50 years of Carnglen Credit Union this year, and our school savings scheme is a wonderful part of that celebration. Encouraging children to save from a young age is something we are extremely passionate about. We want to make saving fun, exciting and something that children can take pride in.”

“With five fantastic schools taking part and our new savings post boxes being introduced this year, we are looking forward to making this our biggest and best School Savings Scheme yet. It is fantastic to see children getting involved, learning about saving and building good financial habits that can stay with them throughout their lives.”

What Will We Call Our Giraffe?

There is even more excitement in store this year, with a competition for the children to name Carnglen Credit Union’s giraffe!

Children will be invited to put their thinking caps on and come up with a fun and memorable name for the giraffe. More details about the competition, including how to enter and the closing date, will be shared with the participating schools.

The School Savings Scheme is an important part of Carnglen Credit Union’s commitment to supporting local schools, children and families. As the credit union celebrates 50 years, the organisation is looking forward to continuing to encourage the next generation of savers.
